Ana Leal (Recife, 1969)

Ana Leal (Recife, Brazil, 1969) is a visual artist based in São Paulo. Her practice explores the intersections of memory, time, territory, the body, and language through a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses photography, video, collage, sculpture, ceramics, monotype, installation, and other material-based processes. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from the Miami International University of Art & Design (2018) and studied Photography at Escola Panamericana de Arte e Design (2013), developing long-term projects that move fluidly across different media and artistic processes.

Drawing on personal experience while engaging with broader human questions, her work explores the ways in which histories, affections, and transformations become embedded in people, landscapes, and the materialities of everyday life. Over the past several years, her research has evolved through projects that address themes of ancestry, belonging, impermanence, silence, and identity. Bringing together family archives, natural elements, artisanal processes, and multiple visual languages, her works move between the documentary and the poetic, creating images that invite contemplation and reflection.

In recent years, her work has been exhibited in Brazil and internationally, including at the Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS), São Paulo; Rencontres d'Arles; Somerset House, London; Galeria Vermelho; and Fundação Iberê Camargo. In 2025, she was a finalist in the Sony World Photography Awards and was named among the Top 200 in Critical Mass. Her work is held in the collections of the Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS), São Paulo, and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (USA). She is the recipient of awards including the TIFA Gold Award (2021) and the Julia Margaret Cameron Award (2020). Since 2021, she has served as South America Content Editor for Lenscratch.
